Sharma hangs up his boots; Kohli snubs BCCI’s Test captaincy Pandya to take charge of white ball cap

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

One of the most prolific batsmen Rohit Sharma in the history of Indian cricket, has announced his retirement from all formats of the game.

The 36-year-old opener, who holds the record for the most double centuries in ODIs and the highest individual score in T20Is, Sharma made his international debut in 2007 and went on to play 52 Tests, 262 ODIs, and 148 T20Is for India, scoring over 14,000 runs across formats. He was also part of the Indian team that won the 2007 World T20, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He captained India in 45 ODIs and 51 T20Is, winning 34 and 39 matches respectively. Sharma’s retirement has left a huge void in the Indian batting line-up, especially in the limited-overs formats, where he formed a formidable opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan and Gill. His absence will also affect the leadership group, as he was widely regarded as the captain.

According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to offer the Test captaincy to Kohli, who had stepped down from the role after South Africa tour . Kohli had cited workload management and personal reasons for his decision to quit the Test captaincy.

However, Kohli has reportedly declined the offer and expressed his unwillingness to lead the Test team again. He has stated that he wants to focus on his batting and contribute as a senior player in the team. The BCCI, however, is not convinced by Kohli’s reasoning and has insisted that he should take up the Test captaincy again. The board believes that Kohli is the best person to lead the Test team, given his experience, record, and popularity. The board also feels that Rahane is not assertive enough and lacks the charisma and aggression that Kohli brings to the table. The BCCI and Kohli are currently in a deadlock over the issue and are expected to have a meeting soon to resolve the matter. The board is hopeful that Kohli will change his mind and accept the Test captaincy, as it does not want to create a rift in the team or lose the respect of the fans. Meanwhile, the BCCI has also decided to appoint Hardik Pandya as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams, replacing Rohit . Pandya, who is one of the most explosive all-rounders in the world, has impressed the board with his performances and attitude in the limited-overs formats. He has also shown his leadership skills in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he captains the GT , the most successful franchise in the recent tournament.

Pandya, who made his international debut in 2016, has played 11 Tests, 86 ODIs, and 92 T20Is for India, scoring over 3,000 runs and taking over 100+ wickets across formats. He has also been a key member of the Indian team that reached the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy and the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup. Pandya’s appointment as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams is seen as a obv move by the BCCI , the board is confident that Pandya has the potential and the personality to lead the team to glory in the upcoming ICC events, such as the 2024 t20 World Cup and the championship trophy
